Why do I keep getting the PADS alarm on my new iTouch unit?
The PADS alarm activates when the strength is higher than 4.5, and can alert you if there is poor electrode pad-to-skin contact.
The PADS alarm is important as it tells you if there is no electrical circuit. The current has to go through one branch of the lead, through the electrode pad, through the skin, and back down the other branch. If there is a fault in the lead, plug/socket, or machine, or PAD connection, then the PADS alarm will activate.
Please note the following:
- There is a separate PADS alarm for each channel. The Channel 1 controls and display (on the left) operate on the white leads. The Channel 2 controls and display (on the right) operate on the black leads
- If you are only using two pads, you need to use two lead branches of the same colour - not one white and one black for example
- When the PADS display is showing, there is still an output, but it is controlled in a different way and is generally lower. Even without the PADS alarm, you may not feel anything until you reach 10 or 15. Keep increasing the strength. If you cannot feel anything by the time you reach 40.0, then there is probably a fault with either the leads, plug or socket, electrodes or the machine
The PADS alarm also tells you if the pad is making good contact with your skin. If you believe there may be contact issues with the skin, try the following:
- If the electrode pad is not sticking firmly, or starting to peel off, try dampening the surface with a drop of water and pressing the pad firmly onto your skin. Wait 1 or 2 minutes for the gel to warm up and improve its connections
- The pads are water based and can dry out. You MUST return them to the plastic holding strip and reseal them in the bag whenever they are not in use
