T.E.N.S Explained – What is T.E.N.S and how does it work?-TensCare Ltd
Here at TensCare, we are big believers in feeling better naturally and utilising the body’s natural abilities to alleviate pain. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (T.E.N.S) allows us to do this. Whilst TENS may sound like a scary concept – it is in fact very safe and has been used by millions around the world to alleviate pain. However, I know you will be asking the question “how does it help alleviate pain?” which is a really good question. TENS works in one of two ways:
Pain Gate
When we sense pain, our sensory neurons will pass a message to the brain to inform about such pain. In turn, your body will take the required actions to avoid this. For example, if you have ever put your hand on a hot stove, your body will tell you to move your hand. However, in some circumstance, you may need a little helping hand to stop this message from reaching the brain – especially for pains that cannot be alleviated by simply moving hands or doing something quick and easy. TENS helps by closing this pain gate that allows the pain message to pass to the brain, meaning you will feel a reduction in pain. Perfect if you suffer from chronic, musculoskeletal or general aches and pains. This has been noted to be like “rubbing” the pain better.
 Endorphin’s Release
Endorphins are otherwise known as the body’s natural pain killer. If you have been to the gym or gone for a run, you may have experienced a euphoric feeling once it has finished – this is the body releasing endorphins that make you feel good. Similarly, eating chocolate is also known to release endorphins like serotonin and dopamine. We recommend using a TENS machine at low frequencies for around 40 minutes (we have specially tailored programmes). After this, the effect will last for hours and provide constant pain relief.
Both theories can help to alleviate pain in a wide range of areas such as:
  1. Chronic Pain – this pain is known as an ongoing pain that can last upwards of six months. Once the initial injury or illness that caused this pain has healed, the pain signals outlast this healing process and can remain active for weeks, months or even years. Some causes of chronic pain can be, but not limited to, lumbago, arthritis, back pain, sciatica central pain or hip pains.

  1. Acute pain – this is pain that comes on suddenly and is caused by something specific – this can be a sharp pain. Acute pain, unlike chronic pain, usually lasts no longer than six months. The pain will go away once the underlying cause for the pain has ceased; for example: an injury has healed, or an illness has been cured. Some causes of acute pain can be, but not limited to: Surgery, broken bones, dental work, burns, cuts, or childbirth.

  1. Musculoskeletal pain – this refers to pains in the muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, and nerves. This can be in one area of the body such as back pain but can also be felt throughout the body in conditions such as fibromyalgia. This pain can fall under acute or chronic pain also, depending on the period it lasts. Some causes of musculoskeletal pain can be, but not limited to, fibromyalgia, falling down, sprains or blows to muscles.
