You should use TENS under any the following circumstances

• If you have a heart pacemaker or have a heart rhythm problem
• If you have epilepsy
• During the first six months of pregnancy
• When driving or operating machinery
• If you are suffering from acute, feverish or infectious diseases
• Near heart monitors or alarms
• To mask or relieve undiagnosed pain

Do not start treatment until the cause and source of pain or problem has been diagnosed by a medical practitioner.

If you are in any doubt about any of these warnings, consult your medical advisor.

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a method of pain relief involving the use of a mild electrical current. Small electrical impulses are delivered to the affected area of your body to reduce the pain signals going to the brain, which helps relieve pain and relax muscles. TENS at certain frequencies also stimulates the production of endorphins, which are the body's natural painkiller.

Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) is a type of electrotherapy that stimulates a muscle contraction using electrical impulses in order strengthen weak muscles, build muscle bulk, reduce the signs of ageing, reduce swelling, relieve pain and help heal wounds.

At TensCare we think it is important to offer a variety of different sized and shaped electrodes to suit all needs, treatment types and body areas.

Square electrode are great for standard use and work well for most treatments, however if you wanted to treat the hands, feet or face you may wish to try smaller electrodes for more precise treatment such as our E-CM25 Circle Electrodes. Equally, if you are treating a larger area such as the back, you may wish to try larger electrodes such as our 50x100 Electrodes or Butterfly Electrodes.

We also sell wearable garment electrodes such as the iGlove, iSock and KneeStim. Check out our full electrode range and their descriptions for more information onthe different types available and their uses.

Maternity Questions

When Covid hit, we decided the risks associated with sending and receiving refurbished medical equipment were too high to subject our customers and our staff to. Therefore, we made it our mission to develop a top quality Maternity TENS that could be purchased at a rental price.

We achieved this with our award-winning Perfect MamaTENS and Perfect Mama+, meaning you can buy and keep a brand new Maternity TENS for the same price as a rental would be. No more worrying about getting to the post office in time for the return cutoff, so you can fully focus on baby and yourself, with the added bonus of being able to use the devices post birth for pain relief and encouraging milk production.

If you want to use your Maternity TENS for another baby, for pain relief after labour, or to gift to a friend, all you need to do is purchase new set of electrodes here.

Maternity TENS machines have an excellent reputation as one of the safest, most effective forms of modern pain control available to women during childbirth. Midwives recommend MamaTENS as the machines are safe to use and enable mothers to remain mobile and upright during labour; aiding the descent and dilation whilst providing a more natural, drug-free form of pain relief.

Four electrode pads are placed onto the back; 2 just below the bra line and 2 on the lower back. These electrode pads omit small electrical impulses along the spine, blocking pain signals sent to the brain during labour.

Our Maternity TENS units still use TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) to relieve pain by helping the body to release natural painkillers (called endorphins), and by blocking pain signals to the brain.

However, unlike general TENS machines, our Maternity TENS machines feature pre-set programmes which are specifically designed for each stage of labour to help relieve pain, as well as a programme which when used in conjunction with our breast pads, can encourage and maintain milk production.

Our devices also offers a boost button which allows users to rapidly increase the intensity to provide additional pain relief during contractions, and the Perfect Mama+ has an additional contraction timer to track your progress, and labour log to track the total time in labour.

The risks to unborn babies and to foetal development when using TENS before 37 weeks into pregnancy are unknown, therefore we do not recommend the use of a TENS machine before you reach this stage of pregnancy.

After 37 weeks into your pregnancy, you can safely use TENS to help provide relief from backache, and for a drug-free alternative form of pain relief during your labour.

Do not use on the abdomen in the later stages of pregnancy. Stop using immediately if you experience unexpected contractions.

Please see the ACPWH guidance for more information.

Incontinence Questions

You can fill in the short survey below to see what type of incontinence you have: Stress, Urge or Mixed.

What type of Incontinence do I have?

You should always speak to your medical advisor or continence advisor before seeking self-treatment for incontinence.

EMS incontinence stimulation works by using electrical impulses to trigger muscle contractions within the pelvic floor to retrain, strengthen and rehabilitate weak muscles. Ths improves the symptoms of, and can even cure, conditions such as urinary and faecal incontinence in both men and women, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation and more.

Cervical Cancer

In the instructions for our pelvic floor devices we mention to not use if you have been diagnosed or treated for cervical cancer. This is because no research has been published showing the effect of electric current on malignant or pre-cancerous cells, so we cannot quantify the risk.

Current professional advice (see www.electrotherapy.org) is that electrotherapy should not be used through malignant tissue.

If you are unsure, please contact your medical advisor.

Prolapse

f you have a prolapse, you should consult your medical advisor before using a pelvic floor exerciser.

Increased muscle tone may help contain the prolapse. However, if the prolapse is severe, working the muscle strongly or inserting the probe may cause further issues before other treatment can be completed.

A severe or Grade 3 prolapse has the following symptoms:

• Prolapse worsening

• Urinary incontinence

• Ability to feel organs descending into the vagina

• Pain whilst sitting

• Incomplete bowel emptying

Inability to have intercourse

Yes! We offer devices that can be used for both pelvic floor toning and pelvic pain relief in our Toning and Pelvic Pain collection.

These devices include a pain relief program which is designed specifically for Chronic Pelvic Pain such as;

• Dysmenorrhoea (period pains)

• Endometriosis

• Vulvodynia (pain the vulva)

• Symphysis Pubis (pain possible caused of a misalignment of the pelvis)

• Interstitial Cystitis (bladder pain syndrome)

• Chronic prostatitis

• Chronic pelvic pain syndrome (unexplained chronic pelvic pain associated with irritative voiding symptoms and/or pain located in the groin, genitalia, or perineum in the absence of pyuria and bacteriuria)

Yes! The devices in our Erectile Dyscfuncion collection can be used for pelvic floor toning via an anal probe or electrode pads. Studies show that toning of the pelvic floor can help reduce and even cure erectile dysfunction and pemature ejaculation.

You can use our devices in any position, but most find it more comfortable reclining on the sofa or lying in bed with the knees slightly drawn up.

You can also lie on your side with a pillow between your knees if you find it more comfortable.

It is important to find a comfortable position before beginning your 20 minute sessions.

The stronger the contraction, the more exercise you do and the faster the muscle will increase in strength, you will need to feel the stimulation quite strongly to be sure to exercise the muscle properly. In principle, you should turn up the strength as high as you can stand it. You should at least feel the muscle start to pull upwards, this is a good level at which to start your first session. However, when you first start exercising any muscle strongly, you may get aches afterwards.

When you are starting, it’s best to set the strength quite high, but limit the length of the session to five or ten minutes. If you don’t get aches the next day, you can gradually increase the strength and duration. As the muscle strengthens you will find that you can increase strength and duration. If you set the strength much too high, you may experience aching the following days.

People vary in sensitivity to electrostimulation - there are lots of variables that can affect what you feel - however most people won’t feel much below about 20.0, and some will use the maximum 99.5. Before your first use, try moistening the probe, holding it in your hand, and adjusting the strength to see what it feels like - remembering that your hand is actually much more sensitive than your pelvic floor.

Beauty, Fitness and Recovery Questions

Microcurrent (MIC) stimulation is a type of electrotherapy involving very tiny currents of electricity finely tuned to mimic the body’s normal electrical communication that takes place at the cellular level.

As the body ages, many cellular processes begin to slow down. Microcurrent helps stimulate and re-establish many of the cellular processes that keep the body healthily functioning, such as ATP production, protein synthesis, oxygenation, ion exchange and absorption of nutrients. The improvements in cellular processes, reduced inflammation, and increased production and integrity of collagen help to reduce the signs of aging in the skin’s appearance.

TensCare’s Uniglo device features a specific microcurrent program for the face. Regular use is important to see and maintain results, the recommended treatment schedule is one session, five days a week. Normally, it will take around six weeks to see results.

In contrast to EMS, since microcurrent delivers such small currents of electricity, it often will not generate any sensation or only a gentle tingling sensation.

Benefits of electrotherapy for sports and fitness include:

• Improved muscle endurance and performance

• Effortless muscle training to support the strengthening of certain muscles or muscle groups in order to achieve desired changes to body proportions

• Sports training - warm-up, strength, speed, power, resistance, endurance and recovery

• Rehabilitation for injuries

• Prevents muscle atrophy

• Increased local blood circulation

• Loosen muscular tension

• Improve muscular fatigue symptoms

• Accelerate muscle regeneration after high muscular performance
